What changed

  • Regular full-fat beef mince (20% fat) Lean beef mince (5% fat)

Cuts saturated fat by roughly half while keeping all the iron and protein, both important during pregnancy.

  • Soured cream or full-fat yogurt dollop Low-fat Greek yogurt

Delivers the same cooling creaminess with far less saturated fat and a useful boost of protein.

  • No vegetables Rehydrated dried wakame seaweed

Adds iodine, folate and fibre with virtually no calories, nutrients especially valuable in pregnancy.

  • Bottled tomato sauce or ketchup Rose harissa

Provides heat and depth from chilli and spices rather than added sugar, keeping the sugar content low.

Both figures are estimates per serving. The comparison is a typical traditional version of the dish, not a specific product.

Priyanka shared this pregnancy craving straight to the family chat, and it is easy to see why: savoury browned mince, mineral-rich rehydrated wakame, cool yogurt and a spoonful of harissa hit every texture and flavour note at once. Simple, fast and genuinely nourishing.

Instructions

  1. Place the dried wakame in a bowl, cover generously with cold water and leave to rehydrate for 10 minutes, then drain and squeeze out any excess water.

  2. Heat the olive oil in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium-high heat, add the beef mince and cook for 10 to 12 minutes, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned all the way through and any liquid has evaporated.

  3. Season the mince well with salt and black pepper, then remove from the heat.

  4. Divide the mince between two wide bowls, then arrange the drained wakame, sliced red onion and a generous spoonful of Greek yogurt alongside.

  5. Add a tablespoon of harissa to each bowl and serve immediately, stirring everything together at the table.
